Bailout Route Decider

You need to get off the mountain. Tell me where you are and why — I'll tell you the corridor, hours to the road, where you can drink water, where your phone will ring, and whether a yak can reach you.

What this solves

The Yading inner kora has roughly six logical exit points and the difference between a 2-hour and 8-hour descent depends entirely on which corridor you pick. This tool maps the seven common bailout scenarios to their actual corridors — including the difficult one where you're on the south side of Tanggu La with no obvious way down.

Where are you, and why are you leaving?

Emergency numbers (memorize before you go)
China emergency police: 110
Fire / mountain rescue: 119
Medical: 120
Daocheng County Hospital: 0836-572-3999
Sichuan Mountain Rescue (Chengdu): 028-8512-5555
Park ticket office (Yading): 0836-572-1888

How to read the result

The tool returns the recommended corridor, not just a distance. For each bailout, it shows:

If a bailout option reads "exposed descent off-trail", you should not attempt it solo — descend with a partner and use the rope on any snow.

FAQ

Q: Why is Kashe valley a bad bailout for injured trekkers?
A: The Kashe descent is steep, rocky, and the trail narrows past 4,500 m. For a knee injury, the long way around via Luorong → Chonggu is much easier despite being longer in km.
Q: Can a helicopter actually reach the inner kora?
A: Generally no. The Sichuan rescue helicopter can land at Luorong Pasture (4,150 m) in good weather and at Yading village (3,700 m) most days. They will not come above 4,800 m for routine evacuation — you must descend to a landing zone.
Q: My partner is hypothermic — should we keep walking or shelter?
A: Shelter. Hypothermia kills faster than AMS. Use a bivy bag, eat carbs, insulate from the ground. Only resume descent once core temperature is recovering. The tool's hours assume movement is safe.
Q: Is there a "safe" bailout at Tanggu La summit if the weather just turned?
A: Not really. The summit is the worst place to be in deteriorating weather. If you can see it coming, do not summit — turn around at the base of the final 200 m. If you're already on top, descend the same face you came up (do not try a shortcut you don't know).
